A Four-Month Closure of SFO’s Longest Runway for Improvements is Set to Begin April 26th
Project scheduled for 2022 accelerated to be completed during reduced flying
SAN FRANCISCO - April 12, 2021 – An accelerated runway improvement project at the San Francisco International Airport (SFO), involving a four-month closure of the Airport’s longest runway, is on track to begin on April 26, 2021. SFO plans to close Runway 28 Right to repave the surface layer, construct two new taxiways, expand eight runway-taxiway intersections, and improve lighting infrastructure. All work is expected to be completed by Labor Day 2021.
This project was originally scheduled to occur in 2022 but has been accelerated to take advantage of reduced flight schedules resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Airlines are currently operating approximately 50% of the flights originally scheduled prior to the pandemic. In October 2020, SFO completed an accelerated project to upgrade an area where multiple runways intersect.
During this four-month runway closure, Airport officials expect moderate delays, with most delays occurring on flights scheduled between 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm PDT. Both arriving and departing flights could be affected during this period. SFO recommends that travelers opt for flights outside of those hours to reduce their risk of being delayed.
Golden Gate Constructors, a joint venture between DeSilva Gates Construction and Graniterock, was awarded the contract for this work. The total project cost is expected to be $149 million.

Four Month Closure Begins April 26
This could be really bad.

Thanks - Looks like I might be angling for connections though LAX a bit more this summer. Too bad they didn't do the work last summer when there probably wouldn't have been any interruptions...

That said, a total closure of 28R is during most weather patterns going to cut landing capacity by 50% and also impact takeoffs by heavies. Hard to see this not having a substantial impact on ops.

Still - wish they had gone right into the runway work after the intersection work.

And with TPAC recovery not in sight, traffic levels are likely to stay well below 2019 level for this project.

It's hard to accelerate capital projects when your revenues are severely depressed. As it is, they are pulling the project forward a year earlier than planned.

That was a horrible time, especially for those of us flying out of small airports (looking at you, OTH). We would have delays or outright cancellations because of that construction.
