I flew on 772s to FRA frequently in the late 90s when they were the new hot ticket. I remember being so excited the first time. It became my favorite plane to Europe at that time. I could almost always get a window bulkhead seat 16A? in economy which was great in the 2-5-2 layout. I eventually made "Premier Executive" and could reliably upgrade to business for 10,000 miles each way which was close to what I earned on the trip.
Recently, I avoid these same now high density 772s with their cattle-car 10 across economy and nearly impossible upgrade that can often land you in the middle of the abysmal 2-4-2 first/business. It's sad, but I won't miss the plane in this configuration in the least.

I remember living near IAD then and somewhat regularly taking the 13:00 or so flight ORD-IAD and 17:00 or so flight IAD-ORD specifically because those were 777s.
The best flight I remember was a new 777 in 1997 or so SFO-JFK in first - that was amazing - that plane was one of the first 777-200ERs, so the PTVs weren't installed (or something similar - they gave us the portable tape players).

I don’t know if it was DEN-HNL or west coast HNL, but I’m pretty sure I was on on it and likely in the last row, or a middle seat.😄 As a teenager at the time i didn’t care. Now that I’m in my late 40’s it’s first or I’m not going.

Living in Miami and flew to AsPac and DC often during the late 90s, I was thrilled that United deployed 777s to many of its Latin America destinations out of MIA. The side benefit of having 777 to South America was those 777s needed to come in from hub cities and arriving in the evenings and departing in the mornings to return to hub cities (for connecting traffic).
At least 5 or 6 almost brand new 777s were at the gates in the F concourse of MIA each late evening and early morning. They came in from SFO, LAX, DEN, ORD and IAD. I was glad to be on many of those 777 flights to/from LAX, ORD and SFO then connecting to Asia/MIA. My monthly commute to my corporate HQ in DC were on the 777s. Imagine 777 was on IAD-MIA-IAD as one of the 4 daily flights between these two cities (others were 757, A320 and one 727 out of DCA). Now it is down to one A319 a day.
Good memories on the 777s including, at the time, the best Red Carpet Club in the UA system. The first RCC to served real food/buffet and a self-pour open bar. 777s symbolizes the height of UA’s Latin America operation out of MIA at the time.

First 777 flight was EWR-DXB on MH in 2003. Pretty sure that was my first time with in seat video on a longhaul plane.
When did UA 777s get non main-screen IFE?

UA's 777 are the primary reason I'm approaching 2mm status. In late 1996 a colleague talked me into flying through IAD to FRA just because of the 777 and the rest is history. Between 777's to Europe and 747's to Asia I gave up the who's lowest cost lottery and chose UA first.

May 15 will be the 25th anniversary of the first 777 delivery. United was the launch customer of the 777 and N777UA, the 7th 777 ever built was delivered to UAL on May 15, 1995. It would enter service later on June 7, 1995 LHR-IAD. N777UA is still flying today, but with an uncertain future due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Great memories!

Regarding the actual dates of delivery: May 15 vs May 17. There are a lot of inconsistencies in reporting by news media. Some media broke the news on May 15 that United would take delivery on May 17. This led me to think the press release came out on May 15 and then subsequently people associate that date as the date of delivery or it could be Unite took over the plane from Boeing on paper (on the date of the airworthy certificate was issued) on May 15, but the delivery ceremony was held on May 17 as some had reported at the time.
