Whenever the question of going for MM status soon comes up, I always suggest that it might be better to get MM status now (for instance, before the end of the program year if possible) in case the airline changes its MM program requirements or benefits. There's a better chance of being grandfathered in and keeping the status/benefits if you've already met the requirements before any change is announced or implemented.

Before Covid, I thought not likely.
Post Covid, pending on how remote working and technology have changed business travel, may be not at the scale of mergers between two of the Big3, perhaps some consolidations may happen. We have seen Korean Air and Asiana combined.
