2-5-2 vs 3-3-3 no more?

Do you know whether 2-5-2 is gone on all flights and if so since when? I remember the layout fondly, and DW would have liked cozying up on the 17 hour flight that we’re taking from SFO to SIN this summer.

why does united seat 2-5-2 instead of 3-3-3 on 777s?

Nice old thread. This quote struck me as funny:

2-5-2 has been gone for several years (6?). It went away when they consolidated the fleet for all lie-flat in business; it was never used on the 787. The 777s are being refit as 3-4-3... I don't think anybody's going 2-6-2.

From UA operated flights for economy, long gone
As soon will be 9 across on 777s

However for flights with PP, it is 2-3-2 or 2-4-2
(None yet on 787-9s for SFO-SIN)

3-4-3 (coach config for 777's) would be 10 across.

Right. The 3-3-3 configuration is being retired in favor of 3-4-3 on the 777. However, planes with a Premium Plus cabin are 2-4-2, or 2-3-2 for the 787 (in that cabin). However, none of the planes used for SFO-SIN have a Premium Plus cabin yet.

Not quite as old as all that - the 77H were flying well into 2016 (if not 2017) with 2-5-2 Y before they got converted to 77G.

The main industry-wide change was much earlier though as planes got seatback IFE which meant that three identical seat sets were much cheaper than needing two-blocks and five-blocks custom made.

Both are gone or on the way out for the 777 fleet, 3-4-3 is the new normal.

The UA 2-5-2’s had seatback IFE from launch in 1995

Let it be said - not for Delta. Their 777s are coming out of refurbishment for Delta One suites are still 3x3x3 in main cabin and Comfort+, with 2x4x2 in Premium Select.

Their 777 fleet is pretty small, a small fraction of their longhaul network.

The IFE on the 2-5-2 configuration was the fun looped IFE. It was AVOD that forced the switch to 3-3-3 as the system required more power/equipment for each set of seats. From what I remember, when PMUA was planning IPTE, the original seat maps for the 777 called for 2-5-2 to stay in Y. Obviously, that never happened.

I could be wrong, but I don't think the domestic 777s ever had seatback TVs, even when they were 2-5-2. They went straight from 2-5-2 to 3-4-3.

The international configurations went from 2-5-2 to 3-3-3 to now 3-4-3, but they've always had PTVs.

Correct domestic 777s never had seat back video. IFE was overhead video every few rows.

Are you referring to the configuration with the First Class Suites, but Biz was just recliners? I had forgotten all about them.
