Ground Hold in DEN? 24 Jan 2019

Sitting in the Box right now XNA-DEN. Pilot said they will will have an update in 45 minutes but this may take a while. I'm looking at the weather report and it does not look that bad. Anyone there who can update?

Thanks in advance.

Had a friend fly through there this morning. They reported snow and heavy fog.

DEN is currently ground stopped due to "SNOW-ICE" -- next update is at 1645Z but it has a possibility of extension.

SPECI KDEN 241558Z 01016KT 1/4SM R35L/4500V6000FT SN FZFG VV010 M07/M08 A3020 RMK AO2 TWR VIS 3/4 PRESRR P0000 T10721083=

Low visibility and snow, they're probably trying to minimize the inbound delays.

This METAR is pretty stark. What weather report was DENflyer3 looking at?

You can see the ground delay (GDP) and ground stop (GS) programs in real time at this link.

https://www.fly.faa.gov/ois/

With a GDP, each flight is given an expect departure clearance time (EDCT), often called a "wheels-up" time.

With a GS, all departures (from the SCOPE areas) are stopped with no EDCT times established. The GS will list an Update time and a probability of extension (POE). A GS is just an educated guess. They frequently are either extended or end early (before the stated Update time). When they end, the airport will often go into a GDP and flights will be assigned EDCT times.

The NASS has apps, both Android and iOS, which shows the same information as the web page.
