Scrooge Flights

There are currently 6 "Scrooge Flights" in the air right now.

IAH-SYD
LAX-SYD
LAX-MEL
SFO-SYD
SFO-SIN
LAX-SIN

These flights took off on the 24th and land on the 26th. Maybe the Grinch should have just bought a ticket for one of these flights.

I was on UA839 last year and skipped Christmas.

I hear UA is giving members an extra 2,500 miles for being on these "scrooge" flights.

Any idea what the stocking stuffer given out on these flights will be?

I just checked the seat maps for a few of these flights and am surprised as to how full they are. I understand the demand for domestic service on Christmas Eve and even Christmas Day. Even though the 26th is a business day, I can't picture there being that much business travel between now and the week after New Years.

Without invading anyone's personal space, I am kind of curious as to why someone would choose to fly on one of these flights.

To a great many people, 25 December is nothing special. If you can get a good price, it's worth it.

Although the flights can be fairly full, Christmas Day is generally still one of the quietest days to fly. I flew somewhere on Christmas Day last year and the airports that I visited were practically empty. It was glorious.

Doesn't have to be business in nature. It's the summer season in Australia, for example, so one would expect peak leisure travels, especially from folks looking to escape winter. Also, I personally know many folks with traditions of celebrating Christmas on the Eve rather than on December 25.

Only 31% of the people on earth are Christian. For the majority this isn't a holiday.

For many, especially if you don't have kids, Xmas isn't a big deal....

I'm on a similar flight Dec 31, arriving Jan 2. What would you call those flights as opposed to Scrooge? I guess some of us just have don't mind missing new year's eve and day!

26 Dec is a public holiday in Australia where many of the flights in post 1 are going to. 25 Dec is also a public holiday

Have to imagine a lot of non revs take advantage of the light loads in situations like this and fill up the cabins at the last minute.

Exactly! Today’s SYDSFO left with 20+ open seats in Polaris as an example.

It’s called Boxing Day and it’s celebrated in the commonwealth nations. :-:
