I guess the odd derecho every 6 years partially validates the money for the train at IAD. I live in Reston and it was rocking hard here for about 45 minutes. Opps at IAD are going to be massively screwed for the rest of the nights. Lots of hail, so I assume a lot of flights will be delayed for aircraft inspections. The storm watch lasts until 9:00 PM, although the worst has passed the airport area.

Thankfully in Fairfax we escaped tornadoes and (so far) hail. But it's definitely been a lightning and wind-intensive storm; I was surprised it took until 6:15pm or so for there to be a ground stop at IAD given the conditions.

Tons of flights coming in low over our house right now. IAD approaches sometimes pass over us (we're just outside Fairfax City), but this is one every 30-45 seconds it seems like. Must be dealing with the backed up landings from the ground stop.
