UA842 -Route Change
I have noticed my itinerary for SYD-LAX 04 June 2018 shows the flight number as UA842 ( currently it is UA840 and has been for many years)
A dummy booking on United.com shows SYD-LAX as UA842 on 04 June also.
Flightaware has United 842 as SNA-ORD for this week.
Does anybody know why the change and when will it start?

Strange. Seems to change on June 1st. LAX-SYD is still 839 on my flight in June though. Wasn't 842 the old AKL flight way back when?

pmUA did this from time-to-time. NRT-BKK was most often 881, a tag of ORD-NRT. But some seasons it would switch to 837 or 851, one of the SFO tags. This despite it was rarely the same aircraft; just done this way to take advantage of placement in the reservation systems showing "one stop" service from the US to BKK. In fact for a while, 881 was BOS-ORD-BKK, with three aircraft types -- at 757, 747, then 777.

Over the weekend, I got a sked change alert (in red letters at the top of my reservation) on my July itinerary for this change in flight # on SYD-LAX. That appeared to be the only change to the booking.

There was a time when United had 'one stop' service MEL to LAX via AKL but I cannot remember if that was flight 841
In the mid 2000s the SYD-SFO changed from 862 to 870 but kept 863 for SFO-SYD
Curious to not have consecutive numbers for the return trip 863/870 and now 839/842
I'd be happy if we got 815 & 816 back to pay homage to Pan Am.
