Kayak suggested the following routing to go JFK-LAX on UA.

I guess that's one way to do a mileage run!

I wonder if it's cheaper if you book it as a roundtrip.

I guess if you insist on flying out of JFK on United or United codeshares flights, then it is not really a surprise to come up with such a routing.

UA does not fly out of JFK using its own metal in case you don’t know.

I'm aware of that. I just find it amusing that such a circuitous routing would be suggested! haha

once upon a time I had something like..........SJO-IAH-LAX-CLE!!!!-DTW , the reward travel options sometimes get REALLY creative (I took that routing btw but stupidly missed IAH-LAX so they rerouted me directly, IAH-DTW (after the GA's said LOOK AT THIS ROUTING!!!)

Um, ANTI trick thread, but that would have to be created

IIRC I considered sponsoring a friend for last minute West Coast trip via HNL to u/g the redeye, but he found a real routing. In this case it was plain 'ol regular intrastate fare, and non Hawaii routes were originally sky high ....

Ya, I've seen some strange routings. .bomb regularly returns Texas-YVR/YYJ in both paid and reward via YYZ

I want to see you show up at the ticket counter at JFK and ask the ANA agent to check your bag through to LAX.

I've flown BOS-IAH-ATL, as well as LHR-IAH-ATL. Both flew over ATL on the way to IAH. Flying over ATL, and you still have two hours to go, then two hours back.

From what I read - and I don't know if this is true - you can stay airside in Narita without going through Japanese immigration..so technically on that route you would actually never enter another country and still go through CBP for entering the U.S. from..the U.S.

Believe that is true, although never specifically tried US to US. You certainly can transit (e.g. US-NRT-BKK,China) sans immigration without much fanfare. No one looks at your inbound.

A few years back, I had Hipmunk had some sort of database burp on me and try to tell me the only way to get from London to Munich was a connecting flight via the Caribbean. (Sadly, typical transatlantic pricing applied) It was back to normal when I tried searching again he next day.

You have not gone through immigration formalities, but you have still entered the country.
