Upgraded son's flights.
1.ORD-GRU; GRU-EWR
2. Mar 12; Mar 26
3. W
4. Y->C
5. Dec 23
6. Right after booking

Total routing was ORF-ORD-GRU-VIX-GRU-EWR-ORF. Had to book ORF-ORD separate as R space was not available for ORD-GRU if the ORF-ORD leg was included.

You could have booked on one ticket - ORD-GRU would have cleared, ORF-ORD would have waitlisted.

If your son is checking bags, make sure he gets to ORF early. It's not easy to interline bags across two separate UA tix.

Thanks but only a connection from IAH-FRA on UA, so I'll be schlepping it all the way from A/Z to the B FCL.

The son was buying his tickets and didn't want to risk the waitlist on the ORD-GRU flight. With ORF-ORD added, the upgrade wasn't immediately available. Since ORF-ORD is a separate ticket, he plans to claim his bag in ORD and then check in for the next flight. If the ORF flight is on time, he will have 3.5+ hours to do that.

ORD-GRU would have cleared. Upgrades go through on a segment by segment basis, based on whether R is available on that segment. R was available on ORD-GRU.

In case you are not aware of it: There is also a very nice LH F-class lounge with sit-down restaurant dining in the A / Z-Terminal.

Here's a pretty good review:

6. Cleared early January (~6 weeks before flight)

The outbound in early Feb is waitlisted and looking a bit questionable whether it'll clear.

R space was available on ORD-GRU, but when searching ORF-VIX, the results returned that connected thru ORD all showed waitlisted. Yes, chances of it clearing could be very good, but as mentioned, the son did not want to take any chance of it not clearing. BTW, the link returned a "Page Not Found".
