Booking Awards for PEK-SFO or PEK-LAX - Air China or UA?

Booking Awards for PEK-SFO or PEK-LAX - Air China or UA?
So been reading horror stories about cancellations of award flights in all classes. Does this still apply for direct flights? We have the choice of either UA metal or CA metal at this time. We're debating on using points for business class : PEK-LAX on China's 777s.

Also, looking to see if using Global Upgrades is feasible on either CA or UA on these segments.

Thoughts and experiences would be appreciated!

UA Global Upgrades are not valid on CA flights. UA doesn't fly LAX-PEK on its own metal (you can connect via NRT or SFO -- or PVG, but don't connect via PVG :-) ). You can upgrade the UA flights if you can find available upgrade space and have a ticket in W class or higher. Upgrade requests can be waitlisted, but there's no guarantee they'll clear.

Thanks for the quick reply -- should have been more clear -- ultimate destination is SAN so, two Options: PEK-SFO-SAN (UA metal) or PEK-LAX-SAN (CA metal).

So only options for using Global Upgrades is PEK-SFO-SAN with paid ticket -- and no risk of cancel.

Is it risky to award travel direct PEK-LAX these days in any of the classes?

While the wave of CA cancels has abated, premium cabin award tix on CA are always subject to potential shenanigans.
