Checked baggage

Hi all,

Please forgive this if it's an obvious question.

My wife and I are booked next May from MSY>SFO on vacation from Scotland in Economy. This is the first time we have booked flights internal to the USA, and I was wondering if folks could confirm a couple of things.....

It appears that I don't pay for checked in baggage till I check in, is that the case? I am anticipating possibly 3 cases between us. Should I do this when I check in online before heading to the airport, or when arriving at MSY? Also, is it correct that we should be charged $25 for each of the first 2 cases and $35 for the 3rd, as we can spread it between us both?

any help much appreciated,

dq

You can do either and might save a little time doing it ahead of time. There is no discount doing it online/early.

Yes, each passenger has a first bag.

Also consider if you did not book an "N" fare, that United is relatively generous with carry-ons. So you could consider both carrying a bag and checking one, to save some money.

To be clear, this is a domestic flight and not part of an international, same-ticket itinerary?

Presuming that these domestic flights are on a separate ticket from the UA website provides a useful calculator. Bear in mind that as there are two of you, you deal with each passenger separately. You do not have 3 bags, one of you has 2 and the other has 1.

If you are on a single ticket from the UK, the baggage allowance for the marketing carrier of the first segment will apply to all subsequent segments.

I strongly urge you not to pay in advance. There is no savings and if there are changes in IRROPS, it will take forever to recover the fees.
