Delayed baggage help
Can someone give me guidance on this issue?
Friends of mine purchased ET codeshare for honeymoon in Y from EWR to JNB with initial leg on UA metal EWR to IAD. Due to weather, they were rebooked to JFK to JNB nonstop on SA metal. Baggage couldn't be retrieved at EWR though. Who's at fault and what is the compensation policy for delayed baggage? I assume UA because they're originating flight. They're is no guidance on UA site about incidentals and reimbursement. Does anyone have details on this?

Even if baggage was left with UA at EWR? Apparently UA is claiming they don't owe for incidentals and the website provides no information on this. If bags arrive within 3 days then are you just SOL without clothes?

Yes, baggage is always handled by the last carrier, and at the destination. They will provide any comp based on their policy/procedure - not even worth worrying about what happens behind the scenes since it really won't make a difference to you.
You can always try and request bags to be pulled, but that typically takes at least 2 hours, so in IRROPS depending on the time you have to your next flight, not worth it. And transferring airports, almost easier to handle at destination - as you don't have to worry about transfering bags across airports and it gets delivered straight to you.

Consider also if friend booked travel insurance and/or used a Chase/similar credit card that offers delayed baggage compensation.
Both will give you stipends above and beyond what the airlines give.

According to the OP in #1 , the passengers were scheduled to fly EWR-JNB via IAD. It sounds as though they never left EWR for IAD and were rerouted JFK-JNB. How they did the ground transfer from EWR to JFK is not relevant to their baggage issue although hopefully UA gave them a voucher for the car service.

zrs70: Often1 highlighted correctly that pax never left EWR to IAD, therefore transferred to JFK instead. Unfortunately, I don't think pax received a voucher because it was weather related delay.
AFAIK, pax booked trip on OTA and will suggest them to use CC benefits to cover claims.
