I'm just saying a blanket statement like that is contradicted by any number of posts here. Perhaps changing it to "So, it appears RPU's are basically worthless for any of my meaningful routings at the current time" might be more accurate. If that's what you meant, it came off a little different. Still a bit to go until 1/31/2019 - you still may have a chance to use 'em...

I think the recent weather events in northeast have provided some extra space on some flights. When I flew LAX-EWR earlier this month at tail end of one event and 5 days before another, 7-8 seats opened in last couple of days on a 28J 752. Probably a bunch of trips got cancelled or changed.

I was on EWR-LAX Friday and noticed "GLOBAL SERVICES" on another pax BP as we were waiting to board. Now I'm only guessing he had applied an RPU/GPU to the flight, I can't say for sure, but since he boarded before me, I looked around when I boarded, and he was in row 21. Flight status showed one UG cleared, and about 10 people on the WL. It was the 2:20PM flight.

I usually struggle real hard to use my RPUs and just shoot them at everything and anything and see what sticks. For once this actually had space open at booking! I had another set of flights with RPUs waitlisted so I called up to have them removed and applied here.

RPU cleared for a ORD-LAX flight. It's on a 757-300 with 24 First Class seats. RPU applied at time of booking 2 or 3 months ago. Three passengers were upgraded at least 3 days ahead as that's when I started checking the situation. When I checked in, there was only one seat left. I was number 1 in the waitlist that was only 1 passenger long as I tend to check-in as soon as the system allows me. Four hours later at the time when passengers that start in ORD can check-in, I saw that I was upgraded. After my upgrade, there were 2 seats left. After a few hours, the next passenger that was number 1 on the waitlist was also upgraded and there were still 2 seats left. This morning, no new upgrades, there are still 2 seats left and the waitlist has grown to 19. I guess that the number UA wants to keep for Irrops is 2. Now, I just hope that the UAX that has to take me to ORD does not ruin my upgrade as there has been a travel advisory for ORD from 4/13 to today and UAX flights are the first affected....

BOS-SFO premium transcon for 25Aug.
Booked 27Apr into S class and W/L for PN (GS RPU/pax).
Cleared 27May into PN.
It showed PN0 when I checked a few hours before receiving the waitlist notification, and PN0 right afterwards too.

PHX-SFO (6/17) cleared at booking. Outbound (6/15) waitlisted.
I burned 2 of my 4 on this route last year (plus 1 LAX-HNL, and 1 SFO-SAN).
Oh for the days when I used all my RPU on ps.

I got an email notification yesterday that an RPU for LAX-ORD on July 3 has cleared. ^ I booked it 3+ months ago. The return is still waitlisted.
A short while later, I got an email from United suggesting that I use an RPU to upgrade my trip.

Nearly fainted. First time I've been able to use an RPU domestically in 3 years.

new time window for running waitlist sweeps?
I recently got an upgrade clearance notification for an RPU on a DEN-YVR leg. I bought the ticket yesterday and was waitlisted on this leg but cleared on AUS-DEN at booking.
I've noticed that the waitlist clearance happens between 9 and 10 am, Pacific time this time and my previous RPU waitlist clearance. This seems to be a new time period for running such sweeps compared to the wee hours that waitlist sweeps were made in the past.
