United using 747–400 on LAX-SFO 17 Feb 2017 - due to WX irrops?

N121UA is doing two round trip SFO-LAX flights today. I noticed this when I saw a United 747 do a go around at LAX on flightradar24. Looks to be a one time event and it's not listed on the cargo site excel for February. Lots of upgrades cleared.

Edit: .com is showing UA 283 LAX-SFO as Boeing 737-900 but the seat map shows the 747.

Wonder if it was pressed into service to provide more lift for IRROPS reaccommodation. They're mysteriously suddenly full to bursting (almost considered going to SFO for a quick nostalgia ride )

UA 283 now shows as 747-400. Also shows "on schedule" for 8:05 p.m. departure which seems unlikely as the inbound flight is delayed. In fact UA 420 has not left LAX yet.

According to flightstats United changed these flights from 737 to 747 around 8am this morning.

I'm doing SFO-LAX this Sunday. I hope they swap that flight too!

UA 937 B744 - SFO to LAX Feb 17th 2017

Noticed this AC arrive this afternoon at LAX on RW 6R. It actually had to go-around - just before the numbers, (runway traffic, weather??), but landed heavy on its second approach. Any FTs on this flight today? Just wondering if this was a repositioning flight (… to OZ later this evening?).., or something else out of the norm. Nice if anyone here got the chance to ride up front today on this wide-body short haul.

Reminded me of the "Good ol' Days of United...

SFO is experiencing pretty bad weather delays now. In the past, UA occasionally cancel multiple narrowbody flights and will consolidate them into a one-off 777 or 747. Looks like this is what happened here.

United position 747–400 on Los Angeles – San Francisco 17 Feb 2017

This often happens when the weather goes south. Delayed and canceled flights. Lots of passengers needing to get from here to there. So United has a 747 lying around… boom! They put it on the short hop!

I assume this was an awesome ride for those lucky enough to get the golden ticket (strike that, The takeover killed those) ...assuming the lucky 400 were just happy to get a seat)

I've done an ord-iAd 747 positioning flight and literally was like 20 secs down the runway and rocketing into the air (or so it seemed vs a TPAC departure

UA had not used 744 to Australia for years already.

Running that 3-cabin wide body fleet domestically always brings me right back to pmUA. Great to see

Don't mean to pry, but nice to see someone from Moraga! I went to Saint Mary's and used to live in Lafayette afterward.

And also nice to see a 747 on a domestic route again. I really hope to catch one before they're all retired.

283 was six hours late arriving at 3:44am. They did a frame swap from N121UA to N182UA. No open seats on the seat map.

Betting many not so frequent flyers were very surprised in how big their "737" was.

How many know-it-all husbands were busy trying to explain to their wife that this must be the newer stretch 737 MAX or something like that? LOL!
