While I think the above posters are right about the immediate cause, the next question is "why the heck do Alaska cruises go out of Canada?"

And the answer to that is the Jones Act; if they went out of Seattle, they'd need to be a US-crewed/US-owned/US-built ship.

I'm looking at UA's June 2021 schedule, there's no more IAD-YVR loaded. Is it a temp thing due to Covid (as no cruises currently)?

I know this is an old post, but it's also incorrect on multiple counts. First, the Jones Act only applies to cargo. Cruise passengers are covered under the Passenger Vessel Service Act. Second, there are Alaska cruises out of Seattle (and San Francisco). The restriction is that they have to be round-trip.

And stop at a foreign port en route.

Only UA can answer this but the assumed reason for the flights in the first place was cruise travelers, so lack of cruise operations would seem to negate the reason for the flights.
Additionally, UA is operating present only 35% of its normal schedule and seems to be setting 50% as the future norm for some time, special purpose flights are the easiest to cut.

I don't have access to old information but believe this flight used to be more frequent back in the late-1990s and early 2000s. Surprised they have it at all but nice option for IAD-based folks.

I don't think IAD-YVR ran on UA metal through the late 90s until the 9/11 era. I see an occasional, seasonal AC flight, though.

Yeah, these are passengers who might be paying $10k+ for a cabin and excursions, not mid-week travelers to Las Vegas.

They would have flown A319 with 12 domestic F seats in June... so yeah, brutal upgrade.
