I bought a regular economy U equivalent fare on united for HND->JFK the room. I called to switch to NH prime flight and my plan was to apply a PP upgrade and cancel if I wasn't cleared by T-48h for flight credit and book a points booking on a less optimal route as Plan B. I want the PP for united towards this year's 1K but not willing to sit in economy/PE for it on a transpac.

Anyways I got upgraded with T-9 days out so my plan A worked! Very pleased.

I applied +P to SFO-NRT flight in June. Booked on NH stock in E. I had a couple questions that I hoped people could answer:

1) Did NH stop telling you your place on the WL, way up on this thread people knew their position but when I called NH reservations and the mileage program desk and both of them refused/wouldn't tell me my place on the WL (I know there are 8 people total WL for business)

2) Is this WL the same one as the option to WL an award ticket in J that ANA offers, if so are upgrades higher priority than award waitlists?

3) If my upgrade fails at T-24 is there any other option (cash etc.) to get upgraded to J at the airport?

4) If there is IRROPS on the flight how good is ANA about reaccomodating in upgraded cabin, I know technically they don't have to but as a 1K with UA they're normally pretty good about this.

re: Cash upgrades at gate on a UA ticket, they are not available but I was offered ANA miles upgrade for 28K. Unfortunately I was not prepared for this and did not have my ANA miles stocked.

Tried this again but had an epic failure. I correctly guessed a flight that wouldn't fill up, but United seemed to mess up my ticket (it was a return fare ticket that was re-ticketed) and the days passed and other waitlisters were all cleared 1 by 1 except for me. At the gate, they had trouble processing my ticket and was only able to after 1 hour of waiting. Sitting in the lounge now preparing for a transpac on economy, FML. Be careful applying PP on re-ticketed trips. And also have ANA miles ready (see my reply above).

do you mean this was re-ticketed after applying plus points? That would explain the failure as this is a big no-no with partner upgrades. Applying plus points de ego after re-ticketing should not be an issue

No it was re-ticketed from UA flight to UA flight. I called and changed it to an NH and then applied the PP upgrade. Ticket got messed up somehow, upgrade waitlist didn't clear despite others clearing, couldn't check-in online and had to wait an hour at check-in counter to resolve.

Do you know if this is available till last seat inventory. I have the Amex points to spare but dont want to do this if my PP upgrade is going to fail (even if seats are available) and i am going to get turned down for this too.

I booked a ANA-operated ticket in PE via United with an A fare. I called to try to get it converted to an NH flight to apply a PP upgrade. I was told it would be an E fare on ANA but that its currently waitlisted so they couldn't do the conversion. I see E fares available for purchase on the ANA website, but only '1 seat left'. If that seat is sold, does it mean I lose my chances at converting my ticket to an NH flight? Or would it become available later on?

In order to convert, there has to be availability in the fare class you want to convert to. If NH has only one E seat left you should be able to convert to it. But I'm not sure whether they play the same games as UA where they're willing to sell into synthetic inventory that isn't available on GDS sites but that they might make available on their own. In that case, while willing to sell an E seat (for example) they might not make any available via other booking platforms -- including UA.

As far as whether E might be available later, that all depends on NH. They might make more available, but they might not. In general, it's best to do this sort of conversion immediately after purchasing a ticket. Even then, it might not be available if you b:(ught the last seat in that fare class.

I noticed that after buying my ticket, PE E fare is still available on ANA and did not change price, etc.. So it doesn't seem I got the last available fare but I'm not sure. The flight is still 3 months out.

If y:pu post the flight info and date we can see what the GDS has to say about availability...
