The O space you are looking at will not affect your upgrade. The second row is UA fare classes, and UA O is a premium economy fare class (corresponding to NH fare class G). NH fare class O is first class award space which EF doesn't show.

Any recent datapoints on upgrading UA code-share premium economy (ANA E or G)? Read there were some issues recognizing the cabin (since PE can't be selected on the upgrade form, only economy can) but not sure if it has been fixed.

Great question. My friend asked me the same saying he wants to buy PE but use PP tupgrade but not sure how to do it.

I assume you can just select Economy instead of PE on the form but wondering if there are datapoints

I'm flying J on 2/12 on NH159 JFK-HND and am waitlisted for F. They said there're 5 seats open. Any idea when and if I'll clear?

pretty high IMHO. They usually clear down to F3 or F2. They often run UGs 72-48 hour prior.

Given this, I'm debating just booking economy and applying a PP upgrade. More than 50% of the business cabin is open (a couple weeks out) so it seems high likelihood for upgrade to clear. I would much rather pay and sit premium economy if it doesnt clear but might be worth the risk.

Maybe book a refundable fare then you can always change to PE if the odds are slim to clear for J?

Thank you! Interestingly I've already got F cleared for my return on Sunday 2/15 on NH 160. That seems to be the easiest flight to clear to F. I'm the 2nd PAX on F right now for that flight. I've found the day flight never clears.

Gotta say I booked a few UA tickets with ANA segments lately and it was super easy to upgrade the E fare in premium economy I booked to business (both times was BKK-NRT)

First time use with them but it was great, seat selection even worked on the UA site., nothing to complain about on my end!!

How do you know business is only 50% booked? Seat maps are not an indicator. You also need pretty high fare classes to upgrade Y to J

E&G are eligible. Otherwise you need U or higher and that's not exactly a low fare class

immaculatedx Feb 7, 2026 10:20 am

U is the only economy fare still available. Are U and E/G equally likely to get upgraded?

nobody knows how the algorithm works with NH. E/G would normally be considered higher fare classes - UA would prioritize these for upgrades.
