Maybe not. But I'd also prefer that to having my bags somewhere in the bowels of any US airport for that long, especially if it is an overnight layover. Who knows what could happen - seems easy to get lost, chance of someone rifling through the, etc. I realize people have their bags checked that long all the time, but if I can avoid that over a long layover, personally, I would.
