Long term planning for an international upgrade?

In about 2 years, I may take a special trip, like an Air Canada Vancouver-London. Being special, flying business class would be nice but it's roughly $16-20,000 round trip for two. That is a whole lot!

The alternative is premium economy, much, much less.

Is another alternative to use United miles for an upgrade, even one way? Is it certain enough to save up miles (I have 90,000 miles now)? Or is availability so uncertain that saving up miles is futile?

I'm not sure where you're looking, but this trip is often under CA$3K per person. You should keep your eye out in the Premium Fare Deals forum.

As far as using United miles to upgrade AC, you would need to pay for a Y, B, or O ticket on AC, which is often (or usually) more expensive than paying for discount Business Class.

Thanks for opening up my eyes. I miscalculated the costs, which is like $5000 per person and also will look at deals.

Unless OPM is paying for the expensive upgradeable ticket you're generally better off with an award ticket. It's a few more miles but a lot fewer dollars.

More like $5k for 2 ... this should be cheap. Check regularly for pricing and buy 3-9 months in advance.

Several of us recently booked RT YVR-Paris for ~ US $1,900 (using our own money) for a trip this summer. 2 years is a long time away as far as airline fares are concerned, so when the time is within 1 year, suggest OP start checking the thread referenced in post # 2 as well as Google flights and Kayak. And save up miles just in case.
