There are rumors that United may offer a new redemption option which might allow you to use those miles for maybe $40 worth of air travel (assuming one cent per mile), but nothing has been confirmed. It's very easy to extend the expiration (there are multiple threads on this) if you want to (for example, buy one iTune).

If you don't fly UA, just spend the miles on magazine subscriptions or something.
