Using a 2001 Continental lounge voucher

I flew on CO MAN-LIM-MAN via EWR in Dec 2001. On return leg I had long layover in EWR (12 or so hours) and drunk too much Dom! I asked CO for assistance and a delightful lady escorted me to gate for EWR-MAN section - but the wrong gate!

The flight in question was closed but the lovely lady asked I was placed onboard and I duly boarded to find someone in my seat. I asked cabin crew why someone was sitting in my seat and was directed to back row by toilet due to 'double booking'. Due to Dom consumption I quickly fell asleep in seat by toilet.

I awoke to view airshow and noticed we had passed MAN and seemed headed for CDG. I alerted crew I was hoping for an arrival in MAN and asked if captain could drop me off quickly but was denied.

Crew checked my BP and were very upset to see I did not have pass for this flight. At CDG I was met by CO staff and immediately escorted to BA flight to MAN. CO did offer HOTAC but I refused and demanded immediate flight.

I later wrote to Gordon Bethune about his airline's shocking security measures. Gordon never responded but his PR dept did and gave me four lounge vouchers. I used three in 2003. I still have one. Do you think it has any validity?

I doubt it.

What is this "Dom" you speak of in the lounge?

My vote for post of the month...True or not. And only 4 lounge passes for sending you to the wrong part of Europe, drunk or not!?!?!? And in the shortly after 9/11 world? Fun read!

I did also blag a voucher for a flight. Value approx $1000. I got a flight MAN-SAV-MAN. I also got a couple hundred quid due to mislaid baggage.

I used two of the lounge vouchers on that flight at ATL. I used another lounge voucher on a BA flight. Just found the last one and wondering how best to use it if at all!?

Dom is Dom Perignon - a champagne I am partial to.

It was absolutely shocking so soon after 9/11! I am sure Bethune was outraged and I am assured by PR staff it hit his desk... The compensation was measly. I used my redemption voucher and have never flown a US airline since. No real reason other than they do not serve most destinations I wish to access. Fairly sure heads rolled and gate staff at US airports now check BPs more thoroughly!

In fairness, he was drunk, so this is largely his own fault.

I'm assuming this was pre-Sept 11, cuz this kinda stuff wouldn't fly afterwards. I remember going to work with my dad at YVR pre 9-11, we walked up to security, he said "this is my kid" and we walked straight through to airside.

Fast forward 10 years I'm working at YVR, to get ANYONE in, it had to be approved by transport Canada and the airport authority and they needed an escort all day. Fingerprints or retina scan plus prox card required to get airside.

I am sure it has more value as a collectible than what it is worth currently at face value.

Geez. Are you talking international through immigration or domestic. In the U.S. You just need to go to the counter and let them know you're a UA club customer and you'd like a gate pass.
