Changing existing ticket by adding another city

Why does this seem like such a difficult thing for some United reservation agents. I know how antiquated Shares is. I'm on the phone with a pmCO agent who made the change I asked for but she is over $300 more than if I booked the ticket from where I currently am as a multi-city trip. Problem is I have about 1/2 the value of the ticket she hasn't accounted for. I asked her about this after she working on this for 20 minutes and now she is calling Web Support.

My gosh I miss the old United FastAir system and reservation agents who really know how to make correct changes, fast and efficiently. Anyone who believes Shares really is a terrific system, over FastAir, well I have some Ocean front property in the Colorado mountains to sell you. Sorry but this level of service over a not too complicated change is ridiculous.

Fastair (like my fb name?) was not a system or GDS, it was a GUI overlay from the Apolli GDS, which is of the same era as Shares. IMHO, Apollo was better but Shates is stronger in a few ways. There is a GUI for Shares too, both for tea and CS. By the way Fastair was NIT used by pre merger UA res agents, I believe their GUI was called ezres or something like that.
