Apologies if this has been asked before, but I was not able to find anything via search. Are the CPU upgrade windows based on departure time (which I believe is how the United website reads) or some other arbitrary time like the upgrade list being publicly viewable? I ask because my travel on next Tuesday has had two legs upgraded at T-98.5 and T-101 hours (from departure) respectively. As a 1K this is before my understanding of my T-96 window opening. However, I'm a relatively new 1K and even as a 1K upgrades are not super common, especially well in advance of a flight.

I have wondered the same. This year as a gold I have had a couple clear at T-50+. Both had excessive PZ space available if that matters.

UA will fix this since you post this error that benefits the customers. :)

The CPU windows have always been a bit fuzzy, 1Ks clearing at roughly 100 hours has been report in the past. and if at all, closer to departure. On outstation flight with a very empty F cabin can clear that early. In reality, CPUs are not common and will generally not clear that early but it is not unknown

CPU on UA5666 SLC-DEN yesterday. It got up-gauged from a CRJ-200 to -700 the day before, so no one booked First.

So CPU and not having to fly on the Devil's Chariot. Win-win!!

My 1K upgrade cleared at t-96 hours for TPA-EWR

It’s been a long day and need a reminder. I’m a 1K and traveling with my brother and gf (TPA-ROC) who have no status. I checked the reservation and it doesn’t make as CPU eligible. Is it because they both have no status? Do I need to split the reservation so my gf and i can be CPU eligible? It would leave my bro no eligible for an upgrade.

Yes - it is because of 3 on the reservation. Only one companion (i.e. 2-person reservation) allowed for CPU consideration. If your bro insists on remaining the companion, there may be no gf to worry about. Just sayin'... :)

From UA CPU rules:
"One companion traveling on the same reservation as a Premier member is eligible for Complimentary Premier Upgrades on select flights and can be confirmed with the same priority as the Premier member, even on the day of departure..."

Yes, you'd need to split to gain upgrade eligibility for you plus one companion.

CPU MSP-DEN as Silver+non status family member on 3/26, early flight out of MSP. Cleared T24. Top two on the list.

Hawkeyefan Apr 4, 2025 5:08 pm

CPU EWR-MSP, 2nd on list as Silver, cleared at gate though split from my companion I selected at check in (non status family member) which I thought couldnt happen?

At any rate batted 2 for 4 on this RT. Not bad!

Clearance at the gate is always one-by-one.

ok, they should at least have called me to the podium to see if I wanted to do the split before just asuming, right? There is a reason elites companion up for a CPU.

This time didnt matter too much as I let my wife sit up front in the E175 and I had 7c&d to myself

"Should" is a value judgment. Is it policy? No. Some agents will do it.

... Because, if you didn't, your wife wouldn't have been eligible at all?

Correct, but we also do it to not be split away solo from our traveling party. Id prefer an all or none approach in this case rather than picking apart traveling companions

Nobody who knows the system is doing that, because it doesn't work the way you assumed, and it never has.

Then you need to wait to check in and hope the computer upgrades you before check-in. Once you've checked in and indicated that you want to stay on the upgrade list, splitting is always possible.
