Wow! I wonder what the market is. Newcastle is a lot like former United hub Cleveland — it was important to industry earlier in the 20th century, but now it's looking for a new role.

Wow. It's hard to resist the belief that this is all due to the MTV programs Jersey Shore and Geordie Shore
Actually, Newcastle a great place in the north east of England, and I can see it being a very good tactical move. I can't think of any other major carrier that does TATL from anywhere near there.

Another useless new UA route for most of us.

We shall see how this turns out. AA tried to open this route a few years ago, to great fanfare, but pulled out at the last minute - apparently due to poor ticket sales. However, it's been suggested this had more to do with fellow OW member BA's grasp on NCL.
AFAIK there's no other *A out of NCL. Germanwings fly to the Dusseldorf hub, but that route is getting scrapped anyway.
I usually fly OW so it's unlikely I'll be using this route. I'm sure this is the case with many frequent flyers out of NCL. They'll be OW/BA (connecting through LHR) or SkyTeam/KLM (connecting through AMS). However, I hope the competition might drive down some of BA's high prices as NCL is my local.

Sacramento is the capital of the most populous state in the country, and the third largest state by area. I'd wager more people find value in UA serving SMF over NCL.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Everyone gripes about routes being cut. They add a new route. Then people gripe about it not being useful. As long as 169 people 5 days a week find it useful (and pay for it), then it doesn't really matter to the rest of us.

I have no idea how UA chooses the locations it serves - NCL being a prime example. It's almost as if they said "gee, we have a spare TATL-capable airframe, what about Newcastle?"
