R/RN one in the same?

Good Afternoon,

I have searched extensively but cannot seem to find specific clarification to this question. When checking "R" class (or J, Z, P, X, etc. for that matter) availability is the attached "?N" class (JN, ZN, PN, XN, etc.) considered the same? So if R9 switches to R8, then RN9 will also become RN8 the same time?

Thanks!

If I recall correctly:

- JN/ZN/YN/HN track J/Z/Y/H exactly

- IN has been observed to sometimes be greater than I (otherwise equal)

- XN is frequently observed to be greater than X (otherwise equal)

- PN used to track P exactly (until a couple months ago) but no longer does (is equal or less than P)

- RN used to sometimes be greater than R, but hasn't been seen in a while, and is rarely booked into (a few reports with non-standard upgrade clearing booking into RN)

- ON is not always equal to O, but I forget which way the difference goes

RN is for all premier levels while R is non premier. So RN availability should always be equal to or greater than R.

So, if I have a PNR with one Premier and one non-Premier on it (using miles for a currently-waitlisted upgrade for both) and availability shows R1 and RN1 would it be wise to split the PNR to be able to confirm the upgrade?

No one has reported seeing R#RN for a long time if ever. Best one can tell is there is presently no distinction of R, RN. Additional R1RN1 means a single space is available, it does not mean there are 2.

Sort of. As others explain, one of you will get the upgrade, not both.

That's not really accurate. Premier instrument upgrades will almost always book into R. I don't recall ever booking into RN. It's basically a meaningless fare code at this time.

Contrast this with I/IN, where premiers specifically do book into IN.

Agree with kb1992 that ON is typically greater than O, just as R typically greater than I.

There have been occasional (recent) reports of upgrades clearing into RN -- some of those were manual upgrades and it may be agent issue.

But it definitively can be the other way. I have had an agent/supervisor release an R upgrade on a flight that I>0 when R=0.

So that half-answers my question. Are R and RN exclusive of one another? If an upgrade clears into R1 (becomes R0), does RN1 also become RN0 as a result of the upgrade going into R?

Correction, I see you wrote it as R1RN1, so I missed that.

They are the same bucket. Reduction in R will reduce RN by the same amount. Not that it matters, because RN is not relevant to anything.

I have a question along the same line. If I'm buying a ticket uses expert mode and it shows R9 RN9, is it safe to assume that my GPU will clear at the time of booking?

Yeah that's about as good as it gets. What route, the 2nd IAH-NRT?

That is unlikely to last long. R tends to be quite volatile on the TATL's. So book now if it works for you!
