IIRC, they entered service in 1971, the deregulation act took effect in 1978, and they weren't retired until the early 90s. As such, the bulk of their service occurred post-deregulation.

Oh how I miss that plane!
Flew my last two flights on the DC10 in June of 1999 (CLE-ORD) and then again in September of 2000 (ORD-DTW). UA operated the DC-10-30 on the ORD/HNL route as late as 2001 or there about. I believe the retirement flight for the DC10 was ORD-LAS sometime shortly after 9/11.
Great memories.

-In 1971, prior to deregulation, my brother flew from ORD to ATL with 3 people on the plane (727) and paid $42 RT. Prior to deregulation, there were student standby, standby, senior, advanced purchase and other fares that were much cheaper than today.
-In the 80's and 90's, I routinely flew ORD - DTW, CLE and the RT fares could be as low as $65 RT (yes on DC-10's and they even did a meal service for awhile)
-Every year since 1979, I have taken trips to FLA, whether to MIA, PBI, FLL or RSW and a good fare was $150-180 RT, try to find that today
-I took the family (of 4) to Hawaii in the 90's on FF awards and for 150K miles, I received 4 FC seats, a week car rental and a week at the Westin - even the FF program has gotten much more expensive, but we all know this.
I could go on and on but when you add in the ancillary charges for most of the traveling public (exclude over-entitled elites), I just don't agree that travel is cheaper now

While I keep reading about how much cheaper air travel is today vs. 'back then', I need to disagree.

Adjust $150 in 1979 dollars for inflation, that's $516. Adjust $150 in 1989 dollars for inflation, and you've got about $290, which is not far off from what I recently paid for an EWR-MIA RT.
