Changing an award on a return mid-stopover

I have a MileagePlus award flight booked in biz over Christmas/New Years:

Outbound: PHX-SJC-NRT-BOM
Return: BLR-BKK (2 week stopover) BKK-SFO

What I'm curious about is switching up the return flight a bit. I have some more United miles to burn and I've been wanting to try LH first so I was thinking of doing BKK-FRA-SFO in LH First after my 2 week stopover in BKK (for an extra 20k miles I believe). I know that I can change awards mid-travel on United but:

1. Can I change the award once I've commenced the return trip since LH First will probably only open up once I'm in BKK on my stopover.
2. Is BLR-BKK-stopover-BKK-FRA-SFO a legal routing?

Any guidance is much appreciated!
