Since UA is the airline taking you out of Australia?

It isn't legal because the shortest leg is MEL-SYD. The open jaw needs to be the shortest leg.

And UA can't sell MEL-SYD. And the ticket doesn't originate or terminate at the same airport.

I don't believe that is valid.

The reason you can't do this is because you can't have an stopover on a one-way itin.
