Question changing one segment online, will it trigger refare?

Hi all,

Looking to book a 2 segments ticket, but the flight I want (better timing) on the first segment don't have P class available. If the fare class open up on the first segment later, but the 2nd segment don't have any P class left, will this trigger a re-fare? What about there is P class available on all segments, but the fare has increased? Assuming this has no change fee.

Bottom line is should I buy the ticket now with a longer connection if I can change it later without cost? Or wait a while to see the fare class will open up on the better timing flight to avoid the possible re-fare?

Thank you!

P fares almost always have a substantial change fee. It was $400 on my last TATL.

You will have to re-fare to change to the first flight with a longer connection.

Your best bet is book the ticket now with the shorter connection and then at the 24 hour mark you just hope that P seats are still available on the first flight because SDC is free at that point. That will keep your second flight in tact and you can SDC just the first one. This will require a call to the agents most likely but they can process it for you. It's a gamble.

Assuming UA Gold or above, of course.
