Changing destination once award travel has began

Does United place a restriction on changing travel once it has began.

I book a flight

ATL-POP
POP-ATL-LIM

I have completed the ATL-POP-ATL portion and would like to change the LIM to DXB.

I have called United and they are saying computer wont take it, but cant tell me why. Should this change be allowed?

Changes the entire structure of the award ticket, since you're vastly changing regions.

No it should be allowed. It's a different region, an 11+ hour flight.
You will probably have to cancel the remainder of the ticket, use the credit for the new flight.

Is this really on UA?

And is the second ATL a stopover? If it is, you have already begun the second part of the trip, and I don't think you can switch destinations without forfeiting the entire ticket.

I don't want to assume, but I "imagine" OP was hoping for that awfully-worded "free one-way" that the blogs love to talk about.

Well, if that's so, then let "forfeit" be my favorite buzz word of the day.

I've never had a problem changing routing/destination after travel has begun. Sometimes it takes a couple of calls or a cancel and a rebook, but you can usually get it done.

Thanks for your replies.

Yes. Atl was a stopover. So return trip has already began. Was hoping to be able to change but consensus here and several calls to United show it is not possible without a cancel and re-deposit once that leg has started. The fees for that dont make sense so I guess I will just stick with my "free one way" to Lima.
