Changing Booking Codes

Coming from the Air Canada forums, I have a booking on United and would like to change one of the code share booking code and was quoted with a change fee is this correct or is the agent wrong? I mean I am paying them for the exact same product, with the same rules I just need the higher fare code for 100% miles. It`s quoted at 125$ +200$ = 325$ a bit rich for 2,000 miles but just the 125$ would be fine.

Thanks, Typlane from AC

The agent was correct, assuming you have a restricted ticket. Many years ago UA would allow you to up-fare without penalty, but not today.

One thing you might be able to look at is upgrading online to First/Business. UA allows you to 'buy up' online, when available, without paying a change fee.

But will likely will not get the fare class bonus (OP's reason for changing fares)

FWIW I purchased the buy-up to First for a flight three weeks ago. I paid about three days before travel and the new booking code was A. I got the RDM and PQM bonuses for the A booking code. IME if you purchase the buy-up within 24 hours of travel it books into R and no bonus is earned.

reason for referencing the thread is experiences seem to vary because the are multiple paid upgrade approaches and simple time windows don't seem to be enough to time for sure.

If the current fare code doesn't earn 100%, it's not the "exact same product". @:-)

I presume you're trying to change from a Tango to a Flex ticket to earn any miles on domestic Canada or Transborder? Yes, AC's mileage earning policies, suck.

If you explain to the phone agent why you want to upfare, you might be able to get a fee waived. This might require a couple polite attempts, FYI.
