UA.com Seatmap Screwup?

Hey,

I am looking at the seatmap for UA840 on 3/29 (SYD -> LAX). The seatmap on UA.com shows every single economy seat as booked. Having flown this route many times, I find this extremely hard to believe...

If you look over at Expert Flyer you'll see a seatmap that is more believeable. Interestingly, both UA.com and expertflyer.com agree on the seats for Biz/First -- the disconnect is only with E/E+.

So which site is right? Conventional wisdom says UA.com should be right -- but if the flight is really booked completely full in E/E+ I'd be very surprised.

Thoughts?

At the price I see they're asking for an economy seat I'd say that they are oversold, or at least wouldn't mind being oversold.

I'd believe the seat map.

I forgot to add -- the seatmap went from like 50 open seats to 0 overnight. Furthermore, it's showing all E/E+ as booked. I could understand some middle E+ seats being booked -- but not every single one.

I still don't believe it. Guess I'll wait and see.

Edit -- other travel sites (travelocity, etc) show a seatmap that is more or less equivalent to the expertflyer site.

Does the ExpertFlyer seatmap show those seats as blocked, or empty?

On the UA site, where are you looking at the map? Have you tried walking through the motions of a dummy booking?

ExpertFlyer shows the seats as empty (or paid upgrade). There might be 1-2 seats blocked, but not a lot.

I did try a dummy booking a UA.com, which was offering tickets at different price points, with each marked as 1-5 seats "available at this price" -- but when you click the seatmap thing it shows every seat full.

Hi Everyone,

Just looked at this flight--it is indeed fully booked in Y.

I know it's a looooong shot, but I heard the Ellen Show is taking the entire audience Down Under in March. Maybe there's a connection? Qantas is flipping the tab, but maybe it's spilling over to other airlines (like crew, media, vendor/sponsor reps, relatives, etc. etc.)? Maybe that's when everyone comes home?

UA.com isn't always right. For example, my flight yesterday on an A320. Row 11 on the seatmap was supposed to be limited recline due to the exit row behind. When I boarded, I was pleasantly surprised to find that row 11 was NOT limited recline and that Row 12 was limited recline.

There are quite a few unassigned seats on that flight, both in E+ and otherwise:

Something still doesn't add up. FWIW -- you can now use the UA.com flight status thing to view the seatmap, which is still insisting that everything is booked in Y....

EDIT: The seatmap on UA.com now shows seatmaps that match other sites. Very - very odd. I can understand being a little off once and a while, but this one was *way* off.

So what happened?

Is the information UA Insider looks at no better than the information provided to us? Did +40 people cancel their tickets? Why can KVS and ExpertFlyer see what seems to be the true information but united.com and UA Insider not see it?

Seatmap doesnt mean squat. Plane can be full, but those who are holding reservations have not picked their seats yet.

i just hope for hte sake of the OP he has a window or aisle. long way to go if he gets stuck in the middle!

I do have an aisle seat, praying to the UA upgrade gods that my upgrade request will pull through.

An E+ seat would be OK I guess, but I can't get that for another 12 hours or so.

well, pending where you fall, you may get it based on the booking so far in business.
