GPU Waitlisted...Should I change flight?

Just reached 1K, and I used 2 GPUs on a RT to HKG in February. On the route back through Narita, I'm now scheduled on the 787 to LAX. My upgrade "took" on every segment I expected it to, but I'm waitlisted on the 787. 16 seats show reserved, 20 show available. Should I wait this out, or switch to another 747 flight from HKG? What gives me my best odds of not throwing away this upgrade? I'm new at this, and don't really know about 1K and fees for changing flights, as well as rescinding GPU at the last minute.

1Ks (no elites) are not exempt from change fees on paid flights.
No issue with withdrawing a GPU if you have not cleared on any segment. Gets a little more difficult if a segment has cleared, you will need you orginal fare class to still be available. (there a bit more with corner cases, so will need more detail if you decide to do that)

Does the other routing have R>0 space?
TPAC flights from HKG can be difficult to clear on but alot depends on the day of the week.

If possible I go with the confirmed upgrade.

That would be great, but don't recall this when I was previously 1K.

This would be what we call the upgrade lottery One patiently waits and hopes to clear into Biz, and often does at the airport, as I have most times, but I also flew in steerage a couple of times

And seatmap does not necessarily reflect how many seat are sold/taken, just which ones of the seats sold/booked have seat assignments.

I'm not the biggest expert on MP perks, and having just been re-minted as 1K I thougth that sounded too good to be true, so no hopes dashed to tell the truth.

May that be the biggest whopper you make on FT

Thanks Wine. I'm sticking with the upgrade, I guess, as my upgrade from LAX-ORD cleared, and it sounds like a hassle.

As I said, I'm new here, and don't know all the terminology yet. Is R>0 Reserved>0?

Going for Chinese NY. I'm on the upper deck of a 747 (for the first time) on the outbound, and coming back on Val Day 2/14, which is a Thursday. Not sure if that would increase my chances, or no.

UD on 747 is the ONLY place where I received consistently good / very good service on UA, sUA or sCO.

Can't say anything about int'l First, as that's just not in my league, but I had bad service in Biz on 747 lower deck and 777. And don't get me started on domestic FC Usually it's good, even excellent, but it's inconsistent. Of course much of my travel is in steerage, and the inconsistencies there are even worse
