The flight was moved by 4 hours and I would say that was pretty major.
I really was trying to ask about simple flights. No stops or added one ways or anything fancy.
Looks like non-premier members get hit with a $150 fee for cancelling and redepositing miles. Not sure that they wouldn't wave the fee if you raised a stink when they (actually it was Air China that moved their flight) moved the flight.
Thanks!

Ugh. I really dislike when people describe this as a free one-way. It leads people to have unreasonable expectations about what is possible. What you can have is a stopover. In other words, you book the return YYY-XXX(stop and spend time here, maybe it's home-ZZZ. UA's award routing rules are so incredibly sloppy that this often functions as a free one-way. However, with DL, the stopover must be on a valid routing. Thus, you're going to be hard pressed to fly LHR-ATL-LAX(stopover)-MIA, since there are no valid routings from LON to MIA via LAX. Many of us think that the best way to use stopovers is to visit another place on your trip. For instance, on my way back from HKG in June, I'm stopping in TYO to spend some extra time before continuing back to the states.

I guess the real answer is that you might not want to cancel a one way to avoid the fees. To me, the fees would be the only negative for voluntarily canceling the return leg. And let's face it, how often does the return flight get changed by a significant amount after you've started your trip. Probably not much.
