So, I hate to spoil the party, but I need more evidence that the e-mail is wrong before I pile on.

So the fact that the man who received this email is named Chris Chmura doesn't count?

They're sorta stuck....if they don't respond because they think it's a joke, they get yelled at; if they do respond and it's a joke, they get yelled at. Err on the side of caution and respond.

As for odd names, I came across one while doing to research on one of our clients the other day...can't tell you exactly what it is, because I'm sure there's only one person named this out there, but it was the along the lines of "Egypt Protests." I actually emailed someone in QA to see if they were using it as a test name....

I once got a letter at work addressed to "Software Eng". Inside, the letter began "Dear Mr. Eng".

I once received a letter when I worked at Ernst & Whinney, a predecessor firm to EY.

Inside, the salutation was: "Dear Ernest W. Hiney"

Sometimes we get them addressed to xxx and the xxx family. That would make this:

Dear Ernest, you and the Hiney family are invited to...

It is possible that the airline employee had, immediately prior to sending Chris Chmura his e-mail, had sent an e-mail with the same text to someone surnamed Human, and simply forgot to change the salutation. It has happened to me.

Mr. Human, Mr. Eng and Mr. Hiney

I once received a resume with the cover letter addressed as "To Whom It May Concern"
About a week later, the recent grad who penned that letter called to ask if we were hiring.
I asked him who he sent the letter to and he actually said "To Whom it May Concern"

I said "Unfortunately, she quit last week". He didn't get it.

This is the second time today that I've referenced the Human Fund. This is a good day.

There was a South African figure skater (I know - you're thinking that's even more unlikely than a person with the surname, Human) named Shirene Human who competed from the late 1990s to around 2005.

This is so funny, it is tragic. We all know that airlines send out boiler plate. Some do it better than others. One thing we do know -- United is a joke.
