UA doesn't allow hold of an award ticket now?

I hold an award ticket on the web to add an SQ segment. However the operator told me she must issue the ticket immediately after doing so. So they took over all the chances of holding an award ticket?

As I know changing of a ticket before 21 days period cost nothing. So can I just issue the ticket and change it later?

Hold disappeared a while ago.

Fee-free changes 21 days out refers to date changes with the same O/D pair. If you change the cities then you pay a fee.

Actually, they will still hold award reservations for 24 hours - just NOT if there is an SQ flight involved. SQ requires tkt numbers right away or they will cancel the booking

FareLock basically replaced holds on award tickets. You can still get 24 hour holds, I believe, if you do not have the necessary miles to ticket.

Also if you change the carrier even if the O/D stays the same.

I recently changed (online) a UA saver award from Salzburg--VIE--MUC--IAD to Salzburg--VIE--IAD. The VIE--MUC--IAD flights were to have been on LH, and the new flight is entirely on OS. I was not charged a fee.

Last week I was able to place a UA/*A mixed itinerary on hold. Today I called in and agent said had to ticket immediately .

Both times were a mix of UA and THAI AIRWAYS. Whats the deal?

Well, it's a big difference from back when UA allowed holds of weeks/months-long before ticketing.

I actually thought that was a bit unfair to the people who wanted to redeem awards but couldn't, because others were sitting on them.

When was this new policy announced? My understanding was that there was a 72 hour hold period for award tickets.
