Does award waitlist actually work?

I have a confirmed Award in I class (domestic).
I would like to take the flight that leaves an hour later but there is no I class available at the moment.
Is there any way I can standby for I for that flight while keeping my confirmed ticket? Or should I just keep monitoring and if it ever does open up just call in?

Today at T-24, UA988 finally opened up "I" inventory. It had been I0/IN0 since we booked back in early March (my R-space upgrade cleared in May, FWIW).
Of course, all that's left are middles in the 4-across section, so our strategy is going to be to keep my wife's "O" ticket and have her offer to trade the window seat next to me for her seat in 1A. Can't imagine someone in a window seat in C will turn down a window (with aisle access) in F.

I guess I forgot to mention I have a flight on LH as part of the award, so the agent said that she can't put me on a waitlist even if it's for the UA segment of the rez because if it clears it will cancel the rest of my trip on LH...
does that make any sense???

I have UA metal segments waitlisted on upcoming all-OZ and -BR itineraries

Definitely HUACA. I have had several itins in the past 12 months--including the one we're flying tomorrow--which involved waitlisted UA metal segments + partner flights (this one involved LH and OU and UA, with a waitlist from LH to UA metal on the FRA-IAD flight plus change-of-class waitlists on that UA metal once we got on it).

Now, the only grain of truth to what the agent said is that if/when the segment clears, you will likely have to call to have an agent reissue the ticket, and I suppose a bad agent could do something stupid to the LH flights. IME, though, that would be very rare; on my most recent one, I had to have agents reissue at least three times (schedule changes plus cleared waitlists), and they preserved the partner flights without issue.

If questioned, just indicate that you are waitlisting a United segment, not a partner segment. IME, it may take 2-3 more calls to reach an agent who understands this is completely possible.

What would I do without FT!
It literally just took me to HUACA 3 times and there you go I didn't even have to say anything, agent goes: SURE hold on, not 10 seconds later she tells me I'm waitlisted.
Again, thank you both, or else I probably would have just let go after the first try.
Now I hope my LH flights stay the same and I don't accidentally get pushed back to coach!
Safe travels everyone
