FAA Directive Ordering UA to Turn Direct TV "Off"!?

Mods: sorry if this is already being discussed I wanted to post it quick when I had the chance.

I just got off SAN-DEN which was being operated by a pmCO crew and plane (738). The DTV was not on when the plane was being loaded, shortly after take off I used the rest room and asked if the DTV was broken. I was advised that just this morning (6/15) the FAA ordered it turned off! Why? They don't know, for how long? They don't know.

This is either the BIGGEST whopper every by a FA (I know there is a thread for that) OR a real 'thing' with the FAA. Anyone else on pmCO flights today with no DTV?

Sounds like BS, to me. There's nothing on the FAA website or in the news.

When flying with my son, I always pay for it!

If I'm on a 4+ hour domestic flight (non-red eye), I would always pay for it rather than sitting there staring at the back of the seat in front of me...4 hours of tv is worth $7.99....I pay more than that for going to the movies which is only a couple hours....

I'd say BS. The airlines would have never spent the money to add additional weight to planes if there was a chance this was a problem.

Personally on flights to the West Coast, I prefer flights with DTV as I'm happy to pay the cost than have to read all the documents that I carry in my carryon.

Paid for it once on a flight during the day time... CSPAN was the most exciting thing playing.

Unless there is a game going on or it's prime time, its not worth it.

While the weight is still a cost, believe DTV installation costs were covered by DTV -- at no direct monetary cost to CO.

Given there is nothing else on the net and no other passagner reports, this FAA Directive looks unlikely.

Last I checked, the equipment was "free" but the airline has the burden of thousands of pounds of entertainment equipment ... not insignificant.

Agreed. It is likely a system malfunction or some other problem preventing use on that plane. Unfortunately, the FAA excuse was a possible result of the CO infallibility culture.

I took peak at the latest ADs (Airworthiness Directives) for the last 30 days (Emergency AD) and for the last 60 days (New ADs) and I could find not mention of any Boeing Aircraft and DirecTV.

Not really sure what was up on the OP's flight.

Direct TV could be VERY dangerous . Just like "MY" IPAD can be dangerous if left on but the IPADs used on many carriers by cockpit and/or cabin crew are not dangerous . They must be very special IPADS. EK crews now use IPADS for everything from schedules, safety write ups to taking drink orders. They NEVER turn those off but tell passengers they must turn off their IPADS. What a joke. My GF said she is told to keep a straight face if a passenger asks why hers is on, and tell them 'these are IPADS made specially by APPLE for EK and inflight use" total BS!!! I'm on her "special inflight super duper EK IPad right now writing this post and there is NO difference between this one and a my store bought one except some really cool Apps and the engraving on the back. I can get the same porn in this one as I can get in mine (that's not really true - every time I try it says "Blocked by UAE Govt"

What a bunch of crap (The FAA, not the PORN! (well, that to)
