i agree. i began flying to DEN back in 2008 as a result of family moving there. that airport is clearly able and ready to handle international traffic. it is so under utilized in my opinion. i hope this is the start of more international expansion out of there...

you think they're considering a 787 to lure more traffic to that route, thus making it sustainable?

I'm not sure if it will be a 787. One of our resident CO FAs posted upthread that it would be a CO 787, but I guess we'll know more once the media event begins later today.

i will fly through NRT between GUM and DEN when this service begins. It will be a huge improvement over the domestic 772 that was placed on the GUM-HNL route last year - UGH!

This probably has something to do with it: Denver council OKs United Airlines cost cuts at DIA The deal subjects United to growth requirements

I bet it's the forthcoming UA 787. It seems they want to reward DEN for lowering their fees so this would make sense putting a whole new aircraft on that route. Plus if they were to use the 777 then it would beg the question why haven't they already done so?

I tend to agree with this and at least in the beginning if operated with a 787 would pull feeder traffic from other hubs for the experience.

9News linked the service to this deal in a blurb this morning. UA gets lower costs at DIA but must increase service.

They claim the Tokyo service will be 1x daily, and that the announcement is set for 1130 Mountain Time this morning.

This would be awesome IMHO. That will leave, what, CLE as the only UA hub without service to NRT?

DEN-NRT on a 787 is a considerably different beast than DEN-LHR on a 777. Smaller plane with better economics.

If I didn't have worries that the launch may be delayed, I'd book it right now and confirm into C/BF just for the experience. With my luck, though, Boeing or UA will have delays and I'd end up re-routed via SEA on one of the last barcalounger 777s.
