The double chime means we're cleared for landing...

SFO-SIN 10/28, when approaching Singapore. "The double chime means we've been cleared for landing."

So what do they mean a few minutes after take-off then?

That you're over 10k and the FA's are free to move. (Don't quote me on this though, I'm just guessing...)

Context specific statements aren't exactly a whopper.

It's really just selfishness on my part; If I keep myself safe, i'll keep everyone else on the plane safe also

Self preservation is a good thing for all involved :-)

Either up or down it just indicates that you've crossed 10k (and in the old days if the Seatbelt and Smoking signs were in auto mode, they would have turned off [up] or on [down]...the chime is really vestigial of that IIRC, and sometimes you can still see them flash quickly off and back on)

Doesn't mean that you've been "cleared for landing" or necessarily that FAs are free to get up, though it does mark the end and beginning of the sterile cockpit requirement

"folks, it's your captain here. We're number 25 for takeoff. It looks like Newark out there. I do these red-eyes quite often and never seen this"

This was on SFO-PHL at 11:26 PM as we were already delayed.

BWI to DEN last week. Beginning to land and then suddenly a go-around.
"Weeeeeell Folks, we had to go-around because we were coming in too high!"

As I deplaned, my comment to the captain, in passing! "Captain, you're my favorite captain, ever!" His reply, "Really! Me!!". "Yep, first time I've heard the truth in years!"

A big smile from him, and a, "Have a good day!"

Biggest whopper: "We know you have a choice in carriers, and we're glad you chose United."

They don't give a damn and treat us the same way management treats them.

FA: "Channel 9 hasn't worked for years, since the Continental merger"
Me: "Ask the captain if he can turn it on"

It worked after that.

More times than not, any answer that you receive immediately, is off the top of their head, and totally fabricated, which is the reason why I never hit that f/a call button over my head to ask a question!

Lots.
As I was boarding, a GA shouted at me that UA would be fined $10K by the DOT if I didn't put my headphone case (which was over my shoulder) into my carry-on, if I went past a particular CCTV camera. I couldn't stop myself laughing but complied anyway.

Several days ago on a domestic flight:

Me: I have drink chits but they're expired. Will that be a problem?
FA: (After scanning them for longer than anticipated) They are expired, I can only take 1.

First time I've seen them scan them was last Tuesday.

I don't need them anymore, but I noticed because it took the f/a a looong time to get it over with. I guess they don't just put them in their pocket anymore, and move on?

If this was in DEN, the same guy yelled down the jetway at me that my man-purse put me one over, and they could be fined $10,000.00. Seems to be the going rate for boarding inspectors!!
