How to claim miles flew on a partner airline?

Hello: I am an infrequent flyer. I have previously joined MileagePlus. I will be taking a trip later this year on United but the return flight is on Air Canada. I am not a member of Air Canada's frequently flyer program. What is the procedure to claim miles flew on Air Canada? Is that even possible?

Yes, it is possible.

When checking in with Air Canada simply provide them with your MileagePlus number. Make sure that it shows up on your boarding pass as well. That should be all it takes.

Save your BP just in case it doesn't post, but it should work just fine.

I'll re-emphasize - save your boarding passes! You're screwed on this new "MileagePlus" without them should the system flake out.

I may stop doing mobile BP actually - or at least will always print out a hard copy at the airport just in case.
