I failed to upgrade for flight 977 from DXB to IAD on Dec. 11.
I was #1 on the upgrade list when I checked in 24 hrs. prior to the flight departure. However, nine hours later I had slipped to 6th place, and by the time that I arrived in DXB (two hours before departure) I was in 11th place (with only 8 upgrade seats available).
That was my only upgrade failure for 2012. I had flown that same route in August and had no problem being upgraded several weeks before the flight took place. So it goes.

Cleared DXB-IAD on Dec 10 at T-31 on a W fare. (my outbound IAD-DXB failed - first time since about 2004 that I sat in Y across an ocean on a Y fare).

IAD-ZRH 12/6 H fare
BRU-IAD 12/15 H fare
Flights ticketed on 11/19, both waitlisted. IAD-ZRH showed C sold out by 1 when I checked in, but F was open by 2 and I was #1 on upgrade list. Upgrade cleared at the gate before boarding. I assume 2 C passengers were upgraded to F, clearing C space.
BRU-IAD showed more than 10 C seats not assigned throughout. Upgrade cleared 26 hrs before flight.

Pretty proud of the SFO-HKG for being on a Friday during holiday season! On a side note, upgrade cleared 30 mins ago and waitlist cleared automatically with e-mail notification. Still waiting for the EF notification...let's see how long it will take.

DXB is such a tough upgrade - i'm glad my return is via NRT and confirmed upgrade at time of ticketing in nov.

2 pax, W class, cleared at booking. FCO-IAD was showing R2 a couple of days earlier, but I tarried and they disappeared. So it's LX FCO-ZRH for us, then UA for the rest.

Don't know whether this belongs here or in a yet-to-come 2013 thread, but both directions of my DEN-NRT 787 flight for next April finally cleared this morning. ^
I had EF alerts set up and saw both waiting, called in (as I wanted to switch the waitlists from miles to GPUs now that I have my 2013 GPUs). Strangely (or not, given the state of UA IT), the mileage requests hadn't cleared on their own despite R availability, but the phone agent indicated only one of the two had a waitlist and that I was at the top of that one, so she had no problems confirming me into C.
