Seats may be released at any time before departure. Reservations may be made from 0 to 330 days before departure.

I think I made a mistake in my original post, I am looking for saverpass(the cheapest option) but so far nothing out of any of the star alliance hubs

Securing X* award with abundant miles
We all hope UA releases more award seats as early as possible, but
it is UA who decides it; we just wish UA be generous.
Having said these, we may use a strategy that is not 'good' but
legal (in terms of Mileage Plus rules), may we ?
Assume that you want to book for a saver-award seat (say, XY), but it
is not available right now and you're waitlisted.
However, Y seats for sales are available and you have enough
miles for the standard award (in addition to XY).
You book for a Y seat with standard award, and cancel it just before
the departure time*; your XY award will be cleared.
What do you think ?
Anyone has done similar ?
* To get the miles used for standard award redeposited, it needs
to be canceled before departure if the conversation in this
thread is correct:

A) There's no guarantee they'll open up XY space when you cancel, and
B) If you have a habit of it, they will shut down your account.
I believe it's also a violation of the CoC to book a ticket you have no intention of using. It's no different from booking the entire F cabin and cancelling just before departure so your upgrade will clear.

Thanks for a response. It's nice to hear it while the idea is still in my head.
(it took me some time to find out what CoC stands for)
I couldn't find a sentence directly saying it, but guess it should be
included in "Prohibited Practices"

If you DON'T want to complicate connections, I recommend flying into LGA and taking a cab to JFK. Much easier (and faster) then worrying about UA-->UA-->UAX

Also, award flights have a segment limit, and it would be a bad idea to waste three segments on domestic flights just to get to the international gateway. EWR/JFK are coterminals and therefore do not "cost" a stopover.

Lo and behold
Searching for F and J awards on United metal SFO-SYD or LAX-SYD, I actually found one out on 8/24!!! (J only)
Checking the seat maps for these flights reveals many with no seat assignments in F or J. And few (or none) in Y, other than blocked seats.
UA/CO is really stingy with their own metal on this route.

You can get 'em provided you're willing to book at short notice and be somewhat flexible.
Want to fly SFO-SYD tonight? There's a seat in F.
Tomorrow? Sorry, Y only.
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday? C is no problem.
Heck, I'm even seeing opportunities to spend Christmas in Sydney, flying award business class. Out on the 23rd, back on the 29th. This is crazy good, since airfares to Sydney usually skyrocket around the holidays. I'd do it myself (my family is there) except I only have 66,000 miles.
