Continental reward fees for United elite

Dear FT,

I am a United 1K and recently tried booking a reward flight on Continental, but am subjected to a $75 "Service Fee" since I'm booking within 21 days of travel. Can Continental match my 1K status when it comes to fees (i.e. exempt me from them)? If not, can my EQMs from this year on UA be transferred to CO such that I at least have Silver status to reduce these fees?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You should be able to combine your miles and get your elite status matched on Continental...try this: https://secure.unitedmileageplus.com/MP1101OP.jsp

Also, are you not finding the same reward flight on the United site? If so, then I'm assuming the reward flight you're looking at must be on a different Star Alliance airline. You should be able to call United and have them book the same itinerary, though they may charge you a telephone fee (but it will probably cost you much less than $75).

The OP is 1K. I know there's no fee for phone reservations for United tickets. Does United charge 1Ks for *A phone redemptions?

UA and CO have different inventory from the same other *A airlines. I just booked flights through CO which UA could not obtain from LX and LH. Part of it is what is released from the other airline and some is determined as to what UA will pay the other airline, or Starnet blocking. So you can get a flight from CO which you cannot get through UA.

The elite status match link is helpful thanks! I'm not sure how I missed that until now...

With regards to Star Alliance reward flights, there is much more availability on CO than UA for the routes I've kept an eye on this year (NYC-HKG, NYC-PEK, NYC-LHR, NYC-CDG). CO also partner with Virgin Atlantic, and have nice saver awards for NYC-LHR direct.
