Cheapish Accom in Central London

Ok - the story - I am giving a presentation at the conference in WC1 late Nov/early Dec. My usual haunt (2 seconds walk from the venue) is hideously expensive for a grad student trying to save money.
I need somewhere to stay that is cheapish, safe for a single girl staying alone and clean. I don't do youth hostels, but will consider B&B's. Would prefer zone 1 - but will consider zone 2 if desperate.

HELP please! (I have an oyster card and am prepared to use it!)

Cheapish & London are words that are usually not associated
Try www.travelodge.co.uk. There is one near docklands.

They also have one property right in town, near Tottenham Court Road.

Your alternate sites may be www.wotif.com and check out properties in Bayswater/Paddington area. The various Clarion properties listed on this site is actually quite good for as low as 59 quid a night all taxes included. The downside is that the rooms are small, but bright, clean and modern.

the Hoxton hotel has some really cheap rates - ISTR their £1 rate was on again... it generally got a ^ from FTers who have used it in the past.

...or the Travel Lodge City Road, which is mid way between Old Street and Moorgate tubes and pretty safe IMHO has (now) late November rates for £49. If you walk down to Moorgate in the morning you can get to the West End via KX on the circle.

LOL true that - unfortunately most of my mates fled the capital as soon as they graduated!

I stayed at WakeUp London when I originally arrived London last year before starting my semester at school. It was cheap and safe. Zone 1 right near Paddington.

Not the part of the city you want to be in expressley but it is a good deal and safe.

Priceline is your friend. I just got the Marriott Regents Park (not actually anywhere near Regents Park, of course) for 70 pounds a night in early December. You can usually get a 4-star in the outlying zone 1 neighborhoods for 60-70 pounds including tax. (4 stars seem to be easier than 3 stars to book.) To be fair, I've only done this from the U.S. site, but I assume that this would be true on the UK site as well.

I've also really liked the Premier Inns I've stayed at -- several of the London ones often have rooms available in the 80-90 pound range, thought it does vary by the night. See http://www.premierinn.com/
