In my opinion, Valerian is a safe sleeping aid that you can use. The other option is melatonin, but it is not available everywhere without a prescription.

I used to take Melatonin for the first few days after long haul flights to help counter jet lag, but it stopped being effective.

Over the past 6 or 7 years I've been getting Unisom - or Walgreens own brand, Walsom - in the US, which works well with keeping me asleep. Having run out during the lockdown, I picked up Nytol here in the UK, as it contained the same main ingredient (diphenhydramine), and that did the trick too.

All are available over the counter.
