Not quite the sun, but a link to FT on said proposed dual-hub Stansted-Heathrow.

When I first heard of a four runway Stansted, I assumed that would include closing of Heathrow.

I had always assumed that a new hub airport would include the closing of at least two of the other airports in London - so you are consolidating runways, rather than adding to them.

It would seem to me more sensible, if building a new hub, to close Heathrow, close either Gatwick, Luton or Stansted (or maybe two of them - all depends on where the new hub airport is located), and leave the new hub, City airport and one or two one-runway airports for LCCs, Charters and other point-to-point holiday traffic.

The other airports need to be expanded if a new hub is built.

If STN is the new hub, then Ryainair will need to relocate somewhere.

They would have no difficulty in moving to "London North".

They are increasing their flights from London North. Not everyone who flys LCCs live in the north.

This idea of a Heathrow Stansted dual hub is barking however

From what perspective - An ATC issue, a birdstrike issue etc.?

The prime minister says London Mayor Boris Johnson is wrong to dismiss a third runway at Heathrow and he will not be given a veto on the issue.

So the current PM and the future PM are at odds, quelle surprise! ;):D

A hub is about connections. If you think the schlep from T3 to T5 is bad, imagine what it would be like from STN to LHR.

I'll say it again, let's flatten Slough and build a few extra LHR runways in that space. ;) :D

Okay yeah that's what I didn't get, it would be a pain to do that. It would be nice if my train didn't have to stop at Slough on the way out of London though.;)

Surely if you had two big hubs you would have BA and Oneworld at one and Star Alliance at the other (I seem to recall a third alliance too, maybe they could use Luton). Kind of like EWR/JFK or, uh, nowhere else actually.

Skyteam is the third big one.

Over a third (34%) of tourism chiefs believe expanding Heathrow is the best way of solving the UK's airport capacity problems, according to a poll.

People don't just connect to affiliated airlines at hubs and certainly LHR has a variety of alliances and non-allied airlines.

Well that's an amusing way to put it. One could also read it as "66% of tourism chiefs don't believe expanding Heathrow is the best way of solving the UK's airport capacity problems".

Boris has been at it again

The London mayor has taken his case for a Thames estuary airport to the man reviewing government aviation policy.

‘Such a scheme is insane, stupid and hare-brained. To try to come up with a new green-field site plan with no infrastructure and no motorway or rail links and which would take the rest of my life to build is insanely and asininely stupid.’
