Offer from FlyClear; Is Price Right?
I hope this is the right place to post this.
I'm a Clear member in San Francisco and a few minutes ago I got a renewal offer (of sorts) from Steven Brill. Clear is "offering" to let us renew for up to 3 years at the current price of $128. They claim the price will rise "significantly" this fall. What confuses me is that I originally joined Clear for $99 last fall. Even the website states that the annual membership fee is $100, plus a $28 one-time TSA vetting charge. By my math, those of us who have already paid the one-time $28 charge should pay 3 x $100 for 3 more years. Otherwise, FlyClear.com is asking us to pay the TSA charge 3 more times. Has anyone else received this offer or questioned the renewal rate calculation to Clear? |
The $28 is a separate fee, but it's not a one time according to their faq
Can I buy a membership for more than one year? Are there discounts? Clear is available for $100 plus a $28 TSA vetting fee, for a total of $128 per year. Lock in these prices by purchasing a two-year membership for $256 or a three-year membership for $384. Your Clear card will work at any US airport with a registered traveler program at no additional cost. |
I'm unsure that paying the idiots at TSA $28 to research me makes sense. Take a look at the morons employed in the airports - imagine who is doing their background research...

Clear ceases operations & is back [merged threads]
I know that some of us use the Clear Lanes, but I just went to the website to renew my yearly memebership, and they are closing down as of 11pm June 22, 2009. I knew it was bound to happen esp. when they raised the fees to 200 dollars per year, but really it was worth it to skip ahead of the line.

Yeah too bad :-(

I have always been against CLEAR. This news makes me happy. :) |
Confirms my suspicions about why turning over lots of personal data to a private company was a bad idea all along.

Hmm, glad I didn't pay for it (got 1yr free on the Hyatt deal).
I did get pretty good use of it - definitely got my money's worth :D It was helpful during busy times at IAD and SFO but pretty much useless at MCO since they didn't seem to have a clue... |
You might want to update this thread in the Travel Safety/Security forum which might be more relavent:

Wow... I just used it this AM @ EWR! I got a free year from Marriott but happily bought an extra year... I gave the three month promo memberships they sent me to a few coworkers and they all loved it too. It was a HUGE time saver at LGA & EWR for Monday 6AM flights :-(

Clear to Cease Operations
Just broke by Aviation Week, CLEAR, the registered traveler program, is shutting down. Apparently unable to continue to finance. Clear's website is dead & simply reads that the lanes are closing.

Wow. Simply amazing.
http://www.flyclear.com/ FT breaks the news again! ADD: Here's the AW link with a bit more info. |
