Thanks. What happens after 30 days? Does the card get canceled or can it still be activated?

The card gets cancelled and you will need to order a replacement if you want one.

The card is not required when arriving in the US by air; generally, it is only needed for priority processing when entering the US at land borders and to access the Canadian equivalent of TSA PreCheck lanes.

Please refer to the following thread for additional information:

Renewal was approved a week ago but there's still no "activate card" button in my account. How soon have people been receiving their cards? Thanks.

If you do not activate the card within 30 days, it will be voided and you won't be able to use it at land borders. There is at least one report that a non-activated card was confiscated when an FT member tried to use it to enter the US at a land border.

This happens .. but all you need to do is go online and request a new card. If you never use a land crossing it doesn’t really impact you.

"Activate card" button popped up 10 or 11 days after renewal was approved, but the card hasn't arrived yet. I assume the button pops up after the card has been produced or mailed, but we'll see.

And just to close the loop, the card arrived today, 15 days after renewal was approved and 4 or 5 days after the "activate card" button popped up.

Hope to see everyone in 5 years ...

FYI If you need the card

Applied for second renewal February 1, 2023. Approved January 30, 2024, two days short of one full year. No interview required. New expiration date is January 3, 2029, exactly five years from previous expiration.

Received my card today, a day short of two weeks. I don't use it, but for those who do a data point.

In case you do need it in the future, activate your new GE card 30 days from receipt.

I got 2 GE cards today. I thought I had to pay $25 to get a card. I like to have it; I use it instead of pulling out my drivers license for domestic travel. Apparently one comes automatically and I spent the money needlessly.

When the program began there were no cards. Then they started sending them and if you did not have one you could order one for $15. Now they come automatically. But I think you can only have one active at a time. I'd look at the dates on the backs of the cards (tiny print) and activate and use the latest :pne. The only place I've found where activation matters is entering the US in NEXUS lanes at land borders.

Be prepared that some smaller airports may not know about Global Entry/NEXUS card. Hopefully as more people use GE/NEXUS cards, all TSA workers are familiar with them.

I use my NEXUS card as my primary travel ID and have not had a problem using it in several years.

Same here - I've not had to educate TSA on the matter in quite some time. I used to regularly have to point out that the cards were not only listed in their "acceptable ID" book, but they were in fact issued by their :rolleyes:wn agency. FWIW, they scan just fine in the new ID scanner machines that many airports are now using.

I accidentally pulled out my NEXUS card a few trips ago. The TSA agent called to another agent "Do we accept NEXUS cards?" and was told they do.

Which airport did this take place? A small airport? If not, must be a new TSA agent.
